Insomnia Tips

Date March 19, 2009

Many, many people suffer from insomnia. If your insomnia becomes chronic it is important to address the problem because lack of sleep can lead to additional problems. Here are some tips to help you get a good night’s sleep. Drugs should be a last resort and this includes over-the-counter medications; natural cures for insomnia should be tried first. Then if these don’t work, consult with your doctor for a solution.

Do everything you can to make your bedroom into a room for sleeping (and sex) only, not as a workroom or an all use room.  Do not watch television in your bedroom, particularly the news! That’s enough to ruin your sleep right there.  Cover your windows with dark curtains to shut out any external lights.

If you are a worrier, then during the day, make a list of what you are worrying about. Decide what you can do about the items. If there is nothing you can do yourself to fix the situation, then let it go.

Purchase some soft music CDs or CDs with sounds of the ocean or bird songs. You may prefer to use a white noise machine or cds to lull you to sleep.

Make your bed as comfortable as possible. Use pillows of various sizes and softness to support your head, neck, the small of your back, under your knees or between your legs. Wherever your body needs support to be comfortable. Have blankets that are light weight so you don’t have a feeling of pressure on you.

A massage just before bedtime would be heavenly.  Even massaging yourself, particularly your neck, legs and feet, can be soothing and will help sleeping.

Above all, keep to a regular routine so your body knows it’s bedtime – go to sleep.
